How i avoided procrastination (How to beat procrastination in college) |
Hello everyone! I know why you’re here because a year ago I
was also a victim of this curse. I will show you the real and battle tested
ways to win this battle against procrastination. Let’s start with my story so you
can relate also because without this the article is boring for me and also for
you because we are humans.
Effect
of procrastination on me:
When I joined the college, I joined a group of fake friends
also which I will tell you later but the effect of this was on me that a topper
student of High School when joined the new college joined a rascal group also
which affected my productivity also. I started procrastination and started
putting my work aside and chatting with them all the day and also started gaming
like I will say Free Fire. One day I realized that I am not what I am trying to
be but the time was gone and I was feeling regret.
How I realized my mistake:
One day when our test session was about to start in college
and groups were being organized, my teacher asked me some questions about his
topic and I was not prepared for that. He didn’t punish me but his words were
burning my heart and also when he saw that I was no more the topper at all, his
expectations were also burning with my heart. He remained calm for about one
weak and then I fell ill and remained on bed for about one month. When I again
joined, I saw that medium students were also the toppers at that time then I
realized my problem and came home with new ambition. I promised me to work hard
even if I die. But that was procrastination bro and was not easy to eradicate
from life because it also worked hard on my brain.
How I found the solution:
I remained five days in a single room for checking the real
problem in myself and found ten ways of avoiding procrastination by reading
paid books and novels from trusted resources. I will also say that some of my
in-game friends were also business owners so they also helped me in changing my
brain’s functionality. But they were to be tested if they were working or just
fraud. I tested them in real life in my daily work and also in my college work.
I am going to show you all the process involved in this and going to make you
work faster but first I will say that they will consume a lot of your time but
can be helpful in real life also are powerful if you are aiming to start a
business. So, let’s dive deep into it.
Methods for avoiding procrastination:
1.
The 5-Minute "Momentum Igniter"
2.
Syllabus Hacking: The "Pre-Broken"
Assignment
3.
"Phone Jail" + Distraction Auditing
4.
Body Doubling (The "Silent Partner"
Tactic)
5.
The "2-Minute Fire Drill"
Now if you’re thinking that you never listened them before
then let me tell you that these are the authentic ways I read in books but I
designed them myself because if I tell you their real names and ways of their
working then you will be confused and will not be able to relate it with this
modern era. But believe me these five ways are as effective as new ways
originated from them but I have also mentioned that I found ten ways in my
single room. But I also said earlier that I validated them all tested them and
calculated their effect on me and some of my close-fellows and it worked on all
of us. You will think about close-fellows so, let me tell you that some of your
close-fellows will also be required for this but without them this will work
also and I will tell you how.
The 5-Minute "Momentum Igniter":
Now it is a special technique to make you feel better even
if you’re working one a very tough project and can prevent you from being
overwhelmed. It is simple just start a timer for 5 minutes and work efficiently
until timer stops and start work by giving you brain a call that it is our
onetime effort for today. First thing is that if you somehow agree your brain
to work with you then no one will be able to stop you from achieving your goal.
After 5 minutes ask yourself “Do I want to stop or
continue?” and believe me your brain will reply you to continue. Here how
it worked for me in my case:
Firstly, I had to make a preparation the project which was
assigned to me and I was testing all the ways to avoid procrastination. I went
for a bath and when I was taking a shower, I related this 5-minute technique to
an amazing technique which was to train my brain first. I mean it was looking a
silly idea but I didn’t ignored it and moved in my room without any question in
my mind and noted it down because if I procrastinated in that time than this
unbeatable trick wouldn’t hit my mind again and I also said to me “If I
procrastinate this time then I will procrastinate all the time.
I thought that if I warm my brain up for some time and
according to this trick for 5-minute and my brain will automatically start
urging for more work and it will be a fun. I grabbed a pen and a paper and
started writing on it about my life and about my neighbors bothering me. I
wrote for exactly 5 minutes and then I asked myself for stopping and my brain
said “Carry it on buddy! I am enjoying it.” So, I practiced It for three days
in evening, morning and before bed. And when I was free from writing and
started writing my project and tricked my sharp brain.
How it works:
Overcomes "activation energy" (the hardest part is
starting). Once begun, tasks feel 83% less daunting (American Psychological
Association).
And also, I want to add that “You don’t need motivation –
you need physics. Objects in motion stay in motion.”
Syllabus Hacking: The "Pre-Broken" Assignment:
I know it is taking too long for you to read it but as I
promised so I have to provide you full details.
Now, don’t worry it is pretty simple and very positive and
it works all the time without getting you bored. And you can also relate it
around you. You only have to divide things for making you brain thinking
positive. For example, if you have to learn a specific essay and you know that
it takes a lot of efforts to research
and then outlining it which also takes time and then drafting and many more
things but did you noticed that I have broken the essay writing into three steps
and that is called Pre-broken what is said. Our brain is not lazy but it is
screaming for small chunks and smaller steps so to make your brain feel better
you have to train it according to its interest.
If you are a student then you must know this statement “Procrastination
spikes with ambiguous tasks. Breaking work before it’s due exploits Parkinson’s
Law (work expands to fill time).”
And I will also say that divide your work as you can but
please give yourself a deadline for completion of that work and treat
mini-deadlines like non-negotiable class deadlines.
After all I can say "Your professor won’t do this
for you – but your future self will thank you."
"Phone Jail" + Distraction Auditing:
I think you know it very well but if you don’t then I am going
to tell you about it.
Firstly, when I was researching for me then I realized that
my phone was a biggest distraction for me and was controlling me. I bought a
phone jail and did some effort what you can also do. But first, you will say
why phone jail but I also thought that at once but then I heard that statement,
actually I read it from a website or somewhere else which is “College
students check phones 11x/hour during study (University of Nebraska).”
And also, I can say that physical removal is necessary
instead of will power or you can actually say that
Physical removal > will power
And I can say “Smallest act of kindness is worth more
than the greatest intention”
Now, you will say ‘act of kindness’ where does it come
from?
Answer to the question is that I am only giving example and
prioritizing physical work upon just thinking. Hope you will consider it good
for you.
And one more thing that if you want to buy jail box then
check it out with my amazon link.
Now, I also said about distractions so moving to them I will
say that analyze for three days and check distractions taking most of your time
and try to eradicate top 3 of them by this month.
I must say "Students who physically remove phones:
28% faster assignment completion (Journal of Applied Cognition)."
Body Doubling (The "Silent Partner" Tactic):
And at first what I said that some of my fellows helped me
in doing some of my work but that was on screen help I can say. This trick is
called body doubling.
Just think if you’re reading in-front of your parents you
will not try to escape from your book, I can guess the reason which is to save
yourself from home jobs but also we are afraid of many things so it is the
normal functionality of our brain and we should use it as a beneficiary
product.
Now let me tell you how to implement it.
Make a video call to your best buddy who is also interested
in studies and loudly tell him about your goal. For example: "I’m
drafting my biology lab intro."
Work for thirty minutes and then take a break and I can
prove you that it actually works because according to the studies: “Social
accountability reduces procrastination by 65% (MIT Study). ADHD brains
especially benefit.”
And one more thing that keep your mic off while on online
studies with friend in video call because it can also cause distraction.
If you don’t have a partner then “Use free body doubling
platforms like Focusmate or StudyStream.”
And I want to add something to the conversation that if
you give values to someone of your friend then show him by sharing this article
to him that you’re a best buddy and ask him to read this message also.
“I actually wrote 2000 words in two hours without saying
a word.”
The "2-Minute Fire Drill":
We are moving towards end and congratulations on completion
of your first milestone which was to stay long on the article.
I will add this text
for a little more explained article:
Completing tiny tasks builds "productivity
momentum" and reduces task anxiety (David Allen’s GTD method).
You must know that:
If a task takes ≤2 minutes:
Examples:
·
Email professor
·
Download assignment sheet
·
Add deadline to calendar
For big tasks: Start with a 2-min micro-action (e.g., "Open
document and type title").
"Procrastination isn’t laziness – it’s your brain
screaming for smaller steps."
